TOPIC 3 – Timber and Innovative Wood-Based Products
What we can offer:
• Valorisation opportunities for forestry by-products and derived products as lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose and ash
• New materials and waste streams associated with forestry; Product development based on secondary raw materials
• Biomass characterisation, including the potential recovery of nutrients such as potassium and phosphorus
• Material flow analysis and optimisation
• Extraction technologies and pyrolysis under an inert atmosphere
• Biochar production and utilisation opportunities, including surface treatment and functionalisation; use as a soil amendment and nutrient carrier; improvement of forest soils; enhancement of water retention; small-scale garden demonstrations
• Development and utilisation of bioadsorbents, including applications in water treatment and wastewater treatment, and participation in technology validation
• Eco-design (Supporting the planning of product(s) with LCA)
o e.g. for extension of functionality and/or life span
o e.g. assessing the different life cycle scenarios before production
• LCA, LCC, TEA assessment of material substitution
• Numerical micromechanical simulation of composites made from forestry waste considers key parameters such as density, filler shape and size. Structural-mechanical simulation of injection-moulded products and the injection moulding process.
• Material qualification, reliability and lifetime assessment of manufactured components and products through mechanical, fatigue, fracture mechanics and special component testing, as well as the evaluation of combined environmental loads. Material characterization and structural analysis using optical microscopy and SEM.
• Development of machine vision-based quality control systems for wood processing, including automated classification models, detection of surface and structural defects, and image-based estimation of moisture content, integrated into production-line process monitoring.
