TOPIC 2 – Adaptive and Multifunctional Forest Management Systems
We are looking to join a consortium interested in exploring how climate change and adaptive management can affect development of forests (particularly mixed conifer-broadleaves stands). We are particularly interested on how climate change interacts with tree species competition for nutrients, water and light, and how this can be modulated by thinning.
We have extensive experience on field work and process-based modelling. We offer two Long-Term Ecosystem Research sites in the SW Pyrenees, which we have been monitoring since the year 2000. The sites are mature Scots pine/European beech sites placed in the continental/Mediterranean ecotone and placed at different altitudes. Our main strength is on studying nutrient and water cycling in forests and their linkages to tree growth.
We also have extensive knowledge on the use of the process-based model FORECAST-Climate, and we are currently the team in charge on maintaining and keeping the model active. In addition, We also have excellent contacts with local administrations, forest owner organizations, regional forest service and vocational training schools in the forest sector, and can support the creation of a network of forest stakeholders. In addition, members of our team have extensive experience on grassland ecology and the forest-grassland interface managed for wildfire risk reduction through pyric herbivory, extensively collaborating with firefighters, cattle ranchers and other related stakeholders.
