TOPIC 1 – Climate-Resilient Forest Systems
Lancaster BINC Lab seeks partners for a FORESTPathways proposal on AI-enabled forest health monitoring and early warning for climate-resilient forests. Building on our research in deep-learning-based forest health diagnosis from aerial imagery, satellite Earth observation, computer vision and trustworthy AI, we aim to develop multimodal approaches integrating satellite, aerial/UAV, climate and field data to detect and predict forest stress and disturbances. We seek partners with expertise in forest ecology, forest health and pathology, climate impacts, remote sensing, forest datasets and field sites, alongside forest managers, public agencies and technology companies interested in operational validation, decision-support tools and real-world deployment.
The Brain-Inspired Novel Computing (BINC) Lab at Lancaster University is a multidisciplinary research group developing next-generation AI, with expertise in computer vision, Earth Observation AI, trustworthy and explainable AI, multimodal learning, autonomous systems and novel computing. Our environmental AI research includes automated forest health diagnosis from aerial images, satellite-based environmental surveillance and biodiversity monitoring. BINC has experience in interdisciplinary and internationally funded research and access to Lancaster’s advanced computing and research infrastructure. The team can also draw upon the interdisciplinary environment of Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC), one of the UK’s leading centres for environmental research, spanning ecology, conservation, climate and environmental science.
