TOPIC 3 – Timber and Innovative Wood-Based Products
The Materials and Life Cycle Assessment Group, Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) is available to join consortia under Topic 3 - Timber and Innovative Wood‑Based Products. We offer targeted scientific and technical support. Areas where we can add value:
- Wood‑based panels (WBP) technology;
- Development and optimization of new material technologies and processes
- Development and integration of mineral and mineral‑organic binders;
- Valorisation of agricultural residues (straw, hemp, miscanthus) into panels and bio‑insulation (hempcrete);
- Mechanical and chemical recycling strategies and cascade‑use concepts;
- Cradle‑to‑grave life cycle assessment and carbon/material flow accounting;
- Multi‑scale process and property modelling (pressing, heat/mass transfer, structure–property prediction).
Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) - Materials and Life Cycle Assessment Group conducts applied research at the interface of materials engineering, process technology and sustainability assessment. Our team combines laboratory and pilot‑scale facilities for panel production, binder chemistry and emissions analysis with expertise in mineral binder formulation, multi‑physics process simulation for WBP and cradle‑to‑grave LCA. We work with industry and public stakeholders to translate feedstock valorisation, binder innovation and recycling strategies into robust, low‑carbon product solutions and validated decision‑support tools for circular bioeconomy deployment.
