TOPIC 3 – Timber and Innovative Wood-Based Products
TOPIC 3 – Timber and Innovative Wood-Based Products (“How wood is transformed into innovative products”)
- Statistical material flow analysis of potentially available wood volumes, including a sustainability assessment of the resources; drone-based wood potential analyses using CHM clusters derived from DGM1 and DOM1 data.
- Evaluate the thermal performance of innovative wood-based construction products and assess their effect on building energy demand.
- Benchmark their performance against fossil-based insulation products, such as EPS and XPS, to assess their potential for use in low-carbon construction.
- Research on product utilization: Acceptance and investigation of practical experiences in the industrial and construction sectors
TOPIC 4 – Forest Value Chains, Markets and Governance (“How forest-based sectors, markets and governance are organised”)
- Evaluation and analysis of the circular economy and design thinking in timber construction
- Analysis of timber construction in serial renovation
- Special focus on Integration of hardwood into timber construction
- Forest fire prevention through utilization:
o Automated calculation and assessment of fire load
o Development of exemplary utilization concepts for wood to reduce fire load
- Impact of climate-related forest changes on the timber construction sector
- Networking and information activities regarding the timber construction value chain (cluster formation)
- Training and education along the timber construction value chain
For the last 25 years, the Institute for Future Energy and Material Flow Systems has operated as an applied research institute dedicated to the transition of energy and materialflow systems. Our research is characterized by an inter- and transdisciplinary approach, with experts from different scientific disciplines collaborating across five departments. For this call for proposals, we are offering expertise in the fields of material flow management, technical innovations, and environmental psychology. In addition to forestry scientists and timber construction engineer, we can integrate civil engineers, legal experts, economists and psychologists directly in the project. Our interest focuses on two aspects: the material flow assessment of specific requirements for product input materials and the assessment of products along their value chains. We offe extensive project expertise and a broad network spanning the Greater Region (Saar-Lor-Lux), Germany, Europe, and international markets.
