TOPIC 1 – Climate-Resilient Forest Systems
Non-native tree species can be part of the solution for increasing the resilience of European forests to climate change. Some species are being tested in arboreta (such as REINFFORCE), while others are already incorporated into management schemes in certain countries (e.g., eucalyptus). Based on this accumulated experience, anticipated challenges (whether risks are real or perceived), and scientific knowledge, is it possible to devise safeguards that would support the introduction of new species to foster resilient European forests?
Potential fields of study: biodiversity, sociology, resource forecasting (biomass and uses), silviculture, etc.
FCBA is a French applied research institute dedicated to supporting the sustainable development of the wood sector, spanning the entire value chain from seed to timber and all its end uses. Its status is somewhat unique, as it operates for the general interest of the timber industry under the oversight of the French government.
Regarding the forest sector, its areas of activity include varietal improvement, silviculture research and the establishment of long-term trials, reconciling the sector's various interests across the value chain, soil quality and health, modeling and development of tools for guiding practicioners' activities. It draws on more than 60 years of field experimentation and close relationships with professional forestry stakeholders.
