TOPIC 2 – Adaptive and Multifunctional Forest Management Systems
We are based in Germany (Goettingen) and are seeking international collaboration on Topic 2 at the intersection of forest management related to stand maintenance and harvesting systems. We envision topics related to the management of mixed conifer-broadleaf silvicultural regimes, including the subsequent management of deadwood, harvesting residues, soil disturbance, and fire risk.
Our department hosts numerous measurement-based systems for evaluating forestry work processes and technologies. Our group's long-standing research into the ground pressure of forestry machinery is supported by a geotechnical laboratory, where soil samples can be analysed and standardised tests of road construction materials can be carried out. Our mechanical workshop facility can manufacture custom test rigs for research activities. New additions to the department include capabilities enabling elemental analysis of liquid, gaseous, and solid materials. Our available equipment includes a microwave digestion system, an ion chromatograph, a GC-MS system, an elemental analyser (Dumas method), and an ICP-OES spectrometer.
The scope of the department of forest work science and engineering at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen includes research and university teaching of work systems and work processes for sustainable management of forest ecosystems.
Special focus is given to process analysis and improvement through use of innovative technology to improve work in the forest with respect to ergonomics, safety and economics. In addition, resource-efficient and socially and environmentally friendly systems and processes are developed. These designed work systems are prerequisites for successfully implementing land use and forest planning objectives.
