TOPIC 3 – Timber and Innovative Wood-Based Products
We are particularly interested in consortia combining forest and wood researchers, technology developers, industry and SMEs, forest owners, value-chain actors and public authorities. We seek partners developing innovative wood products, higher-value uses of forest-industry residues, circular forest-based value chains, or governance and market solutions that require independent sustainability assessment and credible pathways towards implementation and scale-up.
IVL is open to leading a relevant work package or major task and to discussing a broader role where the consortium and project concept provide a strong strategic fit. Under Topic 3, IVL can assess the environmental performance, sustainable supply, circularity and market implementation of innovative timber and wood-based products, including products derived from forest-industry side streams. Under Topic 4, IVL can contribute to value-chain analysis, cascading resource use, governance, market uptake, policy instruments and implementation pathways.
IVL is seeking to join and co-develop FORESTPathways proposals under Topics 4 and 3. We can lead work packages or tasks covering:
• Life-cycle assessment of forest-based products and value chains, including climate impacts, biogenic carbon, carbon storage and substitution effects
• Material-flow and scenario modelling for forest resources and forest-industry side streams, including sustainable supply and trade-offs between material, chemical, fuel and energy uses
• Circularity, cascading use and resource efficiency, including higher-value use of wood-processing residues and side streams such as wood chips, bark, sawdust and lignin, as well as end-of-life pathways for wood-based products
• Biodiversity and broader sustainability indicators for forest and fibre-based value chains
• Environmental, social and economic sustainability assessment
• Policy, regulatory and governance analysis, including standards, certification, procurement and market barriers
• Transition pathways, decision-support tools and stakeholder co-creation involving industry, forest owners, authorities and civil society
• Decarbonisation pathways for forestry operations and forest-based value chains
IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute is an independent research institute combining applied research, systems analysis and close collaboration with industry, public authorities and academia. In the forest and forest-based sectors, IVL works across the value chain, from forest resources, biodiversity and material flows to climate performance, circularity, policy instruments, procurement and market uptake. Our interdisciplinary expertise connects environmental, economic and social sustainability with practical implementation and decision-making.
