TOPIC 2 – Adaptive and Multifunctional Forest Management Systems
We offer to join a transnational consortium as a field-implementation and test-site partner from the Republic of Moldova, at the dry south-eastern edge of the European temperate forest zone. Moldova's current semi-arid conditions (recurrent summer droughts, heat waves, degraded soils, forest-steppe transition, one of the lowest forest covers in Europe) are a realistic preview of what large parts of Central Europe will face in the coming decades. This makes our sites a natural "future-climate" testbed for adaptive forest management concepts developed elsewhere.
What we bring:
- nearly 10 years of hands-on experience in producing containerized seedlings, with a focus on broadleaved species, and in establishing plantations under drought stress;
- reforestation and restoration sites where planting methods, species and provenance mixes and soil preparation can be trialled and monitored;
- ongoing applied research on root-system development of containerized seedlings, including mycorrhizal and microalgae inoculation (separately and combined), with Moldovan research partners;
- working links with the forest administration, local public authorities and the State University of Moldova, useful for stakeholder co-design, uptake and policy dialogue;
- outreach capacity in Romanian, Russian and English.
Our main interests: assisted migration of forest species and provenance choice for drought-resilient forest reproductive material; containerized planting technology for broadleaved species and its early establishment success in dry climates; transition from bare-root to containerized nursery systems; multifunctional restoration of degraded land combining carbon, biodiversity and local livelihoods. We also see potential in high-value broadleaved plantations (mixed stands of valuable hardwoods) as a way to make climate adaptation economically attractive for landowners and municipalities, while delivering biodiversity and soil protection benefits.
We are open to roles in field trials, demonstration sites, data collection, stakeholder engagement and dissemination in Eastern Europe.
AO LuRenOm (Lumina Renașterii Omului), operating as ARBORETUM.LIVE, is an environmental non-governmental organisation based in Chișinău, Republic of Moldova. It works on reforestation, ecological restoration of degraded land, modernisation of the forest sector and the development of containerized forest nurseries.
The team combines practical expertise with applied research and policy engagement. It has nearly a decade of experience in producing containerized seedlings of broadleaved species and establishing drought-resilient plantations in semi-arid conditions. Its research covers root development and mycorrhizal and microalgae treatments of planting stock, as well as assisted migration of forest species as a response to climate change. It also promotes high-value mixed broadleaved plantations as an economically viable path to forest adaptation.
LuRenOm has cooperation agreements and joint projects with national forest-sector partners and with partners from the wider region. It contributes to the public debate on the reform of Moldova's state forest sector and develops proposals under the LIFE Programme and Horizon Europe, including restoration in Emerald Network sites. The organisation is registered in the EU Transparency Register and communicates with institutions, donors and the public through arboretum.live and its social media channels.
