TOPIC 3 – Timber and Innovative Wood-Based Products
AFI is seeking international consortia (universities, research centers, public authorities, and industrial leaders) aiming to advance sustainable wood construction, full-lifecycle circularity, and decarbonized timber value chains.
We are interested in collaborating on research and innovation actions that optimize the cascading use of timber, implement circular design and deconstruction methodologies, and establish standardized reclassification frameworks for reused structural wood.
AFI offers specialized technical, policy, and field expertise covering the complete lifecycle of timber and structural wood products:
Decarbonization & Climate Assessment: Knowledge in calculating carbon accounting, storage metrics, and decarbonization strategies across the timber value chain (from forest management to long-term wood products).
Circularity & Eco-Design: Expertise in circular design principles for timber structures (Design for Disassembly / DfD).
Guidelines for maximizing the cascading use of domestic and imported timber in low-carbon bioeconomy frameworks.
Execution & Quality Assurance in Wood Construction: Best practices and technical guidelines for energy-efficient, sustainable timber execution in modern construction and infrastructure.
Connecting wood supply chain stakeholders with architects, engineers, and construction firms.
Maintenance & Structural Longevity: Technical protocols for predictive maintenance, timber durability assessment, and life-extension strategies for structural wood assets.
Deconstruction, Reclassification & Circular Reuse: Frameworks for non-destructive testing, grading, and reclassification of recovered timber for secondary structural or non-structural reuse.
End-of-life management strategies ensuring wood remains in circular loops before energy recovery.
Stakeholder Engagement, Dissemination & Policy Transfer: Direct bridge to the Italian forestry and wood supply chain, national ministerial tables (MASAF), and regional authorities.
Lead capacity for Work Packages on Dissemination, Exploitation, Communication, Policy Recommendations, and Stakeholder Engagement.
Legal Status & Foundation: Established as a non-profit organization by Presidential Decree No. 1124 on June 12, 1948.
Core Mission: Dedicated to the protection, promotion, and sustainable management of Italy’s forest heritage, biodiversity conservation, and hydrogeological risk mitigation.
Key Areas of Action:
Sustainable Forest Management (SFM): Advancing eco-friendly silviculture, responsible timber sourcing, and bioeconomy value chains.
Full Lifecycle Timber & Wood Construction: Supporting the complete timber value chain, including decarbonization metrics, circular design, energy-efficient execution, maintenance, deconstruction, and timber reclassification for reuse.
Research & Dissemination: Organizing technical training, scientific conferences, and publishing operational guidelines for the ecological transition and timber engineering.
Policy & Institutional Engagement: Active participant in national ministerial working groups (e.g., MASAF) and collaborator with universities, regional authorities, and international bodies.
