TOPIC 4 – Forest Value Chains, Markets and Governance
PSP is seeking transnational consortia under Topic 4 that work with resilient and competitive forest-based value chains, circular resource use, emerging markets, innovative business models, governance frameworks, investment readiness, market uptake, regional implementation and socio-economic impacts.
PSP is also open to Topic 3 proposals where the consortium needs a partner for stakeholder engagement, market uptake, Living Lab activities, exploitation or value-chain implementation.
Expertise and contribution:
• Forest-based value-chain analysis, market organisation and cross-sector system perspectives.
• Multi-stakeholder facilitation, co-creation and Living Lab-inspired regional demonstration environments.
• Governance, policy and regulatory analysis, including barriers to innovation deployment and market uptake.
• Business-model development, investment readiness and implementation pathways for emerging value chains.
• Circular bioeconomy, industrial symbiosis, forest-fuel value chains and higher-value use of forest and forest-industry side streams.
• Sustainable fuels, biogenic CO2, hydrogen and energy-system integration linked to forest-based industry.
• Stakeholder mobilisation, capacity building, communication, dissemination and exploitation.
Potential role in a consortium:
• Leader or co-leader of a work package on stakeholder engagement, co-creation or Living Labs.
• Regional case-study host for forest value chains, markets, governance and industrial transition.
• Lead or contributing partner for value-chain mapping, actor and mandate analysis, implementation pathways and transferability.
• Contributor to exploitation, market uptake, communication, dissemination and capacity building.
• Interface between research, forest and energy industries, SMEs, municipalities, regional authorities and innovation-support organisations across Northern Sweden.
Funding and implementation readiness:
PSP has experience of coordinating and participating in publicly funded innovation and regional development projects. For the FOREST Joint Call, PSP is preparing its potential role and budget in accordance with the Swedish national funding framework and will confirm eligibility, applicable funding intensity, eligible cost categories and any required own contribution with the designated Swedish funder before making a final financial commitment. The maximum Swedish funding is EUR 300,000 per project.
Piteå Science Park (PSP) is a regional innovation organisation in Northern Sweden. PSP facilitates collaboration between industry, research organisations, academia and public actors to develop innovation ecosystems, strengthen forest-based value chains and support sustainable industrial transformation.
PSP acts as a neutral facilitator without a commercial interest in individual technical solutions and focuses on bringing together the actors, resources, mandates and implementation pathways needed for system-level change.
Relevant experience and collaboration platforms:
Bothnia Bioindustries Cluster - BOBIC (cluster): A long-term cluster initiative facilitated by PSP, supporting collaboration, research, innovation and business development across the forest-based sector in Northern Sweden.
Forest Innovation Council of Northern Sweden (project): A neutral regional innovation environment focusing on innovation capacity, cooperation across the full forest value chain, and links between companies, research and innovation-support actors.
Treepower (project): A concept study and collaboration platform addressing large-scale sustainable aviation fuel production based on forest resources, forest-industry side streams, renewable power and biogenic carbon flows.
Sustainable Fuels in Northern Sweden (project): A value-chain and implementation initiative covering production, distribution and demand for sustainable fuels, with work on markets, technology, feedstock, energy, location, business cases and stakeholder coordination.
BIOBASE (platform): A meeting and knowledge platform bringing together forest industry, research, public actors and policy stakeholders around future forest-based value chains and bioeconomy development.
Bioeconomy in Northern Sweden (cluster): A cross-regional collaboration platform linking actors in Norrbotten and Västerbotten around shared bioeconomy priorities, increased value creation from forest products, reduced carbon emissions and the role of the forest-based sector in sustainable societal development.
Wood Fuel Network in Northern Sweden (cluster): A regional cooperation arena for buyers, sellers, contractors, forest companies, energy companies and research actors. PSP contributes to facilitation and knowledge exchange on forest-fuel value chains, efficient handling, quality assurance, strategic planning and increased value from forest and forest-industry side streams.
