TOPIC 3 – Timber and Innovative Wood-Based Products
We are developing a data-fusion framework for precision timber provenancing. The methodology fits continuous spectroscopic (NIR, MIR, XRF) and anatomical bark-to-core time-series to existing climate data to increase provenancing accuracy by decoupling the effect of individual environmental parameters on chemical, physical, and anatomical properties of wood.
We seek partners for the following roles:
1. Methodological development for decoupling overlapping environmental signals from structural and chemical time-series.
2. Database construction, executing systematic sample collection from established monitoring plots or tree-ring chronologies across diverse climatic gradients.
3. Analytical execution, specifically the acquisition of continuous intra-annual spectroscopic data and the extraction of quantitative wood anatomical parameters.
Partner profile
Academic laboratories, research institutes, or SMEs located in EU Member States or Associated Countries. Required expertise includes dendroclimatology, wood materials science, non-destructive testing. Access to regional forest sampling networks and the capability to perform high-throughput structural or spectral scanning of increment cores is a plus.
The Estonian University of Life Sciences is the primary research institution for forestry, wood technology, and bioeconomy in Estonia. Operating within the Institute of Forestry and Engineering, Chair of Forest Management Planning and Wood Processing Technologies, the Wood Materials Science Research Group integrates applied forestry with materials science. Our core capabilities include advanced wood properties testing, data science, and materials and technology development. We utilize high-resolution bark-to-core spectroscopic wood scanning to generate continuous intra-annual chemical and structural time-series.
