TOPIC 3 – Timber and Innovative Wood-Based Products
TESELA is looking to join a consortium as a partner (not coordinator) under Topic 3 – Timber and Innovative Wood-Based Products. We are particularly interested in projects developing low-carbon construction and repair materials that combine lime-based binders with wood fibres, wood aggregates or other forest by-products, especially from underutilised species or residues, as alternatives to cement-based and synthetic materials, including applications in the rehabilitation of historic buildings. We can contribute materials formulation, laboratory characterisation and durability testing, compatibility assessment with traditional substrates, and pilot application in real buildings and heritage sites. We are seeking partners from forestry and wood technology research, wood processing companies, and building or heritage stakeholders in other participating countries.
TESELA Materiales, Innovación y Patrimonio S.L. is a science- and technology-based SME founded in 2015 as a spin-off of the University of Granada (Spain). We develop and characterise construction materials, with expertise in sustainable hydraulic and lime-based binders, functional coatings for the construction industry, and solutions for the conservation of built heritage. Our laboratory is equipped for mechanical, physical and durability testing of construction materials (flexural and compressive strength, setting time, thermal conductivity, adhesion, shrinkage, capillary water absorption), complemented by agreements with the University of Granada for XRD, SEM, mercury porosimetry and FTIR analysis.
TESELA is a partner in REWOODTING (CDTI INNTERCONECTA-STEP, 2025–2028) developing a toxic-free, modular wood-based façade system from wood-industry by-products. Within it, TESELA leads two lines: water-based coatings with inorganic nanomaterials to improve the water repellence and fire performance of wood-based panels and wood-fibre insulation, and low-carbon wood-cement boards in which clinker is partially replaced by biomass ash and recycled wood fibres and particles are incorporated. We also characterise wood fibres, chips and ashes (SEM, FTIR, particle-size and image analysis) to link their morphology with panel performance. TESELA has also coordinated European projects such as HERIFIX3D (3D-printed lime mortars with natural fibres for heritage repair).
