TOPIC 2 – Adaptive and Multifunctional Forest Management Systems
The National Forest Centre, Slovakia, is seeking international research partners and consortia focused on developing, testing and evaluating innovative approaches to adaptive and multifunctional forest management in the context of climate change.
We are particularly interested in testing forest management practices that enhance climate resilience, ecological stability and biodiversity of forest ecosystems while maintaining their productive and other ecosystem functions. Special attention is given to the restoration and management of forests affected by disturbances, close-to-nature forestry, and the establishment of species-diverse and structurally differentiated forest stands.
One potential area of collaboration could involve the establishment of a pilot demonstration site in cooperation with the Union of Regional Associations of Non-State Forest Owners of Slovakia, focusing on the restoration of a fire-damaged forest area. This initiative could serve as a demonstration and research site for testing, monitoring and evaluating innovative approaches to forest restoration and adaptive management under real-world forest management conditions.
We offer scientific expertise, experience in forestry research, extensive forestry and spatial data resources, and expertise in GIS-based analysis, remote sensing and forest monitoring, as well as opportunities for field-based research in cooperation with non-state forest owners in Slovakia. We are open to collaboration in the fields of climate adaptation, multifunctional forest management, restoration of damaged forests, and the transfer of research results into forestry practice.
The National Forest Centre (NFC) is a state-funded organisation operating under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Slovak Republic, providing comprehensive research, technical, information and educational services in the field of forestry.
NFC bridges forest science and research with practical forest management. Its core competencies include forestry research, forest ecosystem monitoring and assessment, forest management planning, management and analysis of forestry and spatial data, as well as advisory services, education and knowledge transfer to forestry practice.
A key strength of NFC lies in its extensive expertise and national-level data resources, including forest information systems, spatial databases and mapping resources. By integrating scientific research, forest management planning and close cooperation with forestry practitioners, NFC is a valuable partner for developing, testing and evaluating innovative approaches to sustainable, adaptive and multifunctional forest management.
