TOPIC 3 – Timber and Innovative Wood-Based Products
We are interested in research activities related to catalytic and electrochemical valorisation of lignocellulosic fractions, specifically monomer production for usage in renewable polymers and chemicals production and their utilisation replacing fossil-based compounds. We have broad experience in biomass refinery research, analysis of complex mixtures, materials characterisation, separation and fractionation studies, techno-economics and LCA studies.
SINTEF is one of Europe’s largest independent, non-profit research organisations. Its institutes include SINTEF Industry and SINTEF Community. This combination lets it cover the full Topic 3 value chain, from wood-derived side streams to chemical intermediates and wood-based products in use.
SINTEF Industry has long-standing expertise in lignin and lignocellulosic carbohydrate valorisation. Its work covers catalytic conversion of lignin for the production of high added value chemicals, vanillin production from lignin, wood-based biorefinery concepts, and lignin-modified phenolic resins for plywood panels. That last line of work links lignin-derived chemicals directly back to engineered wood products. SINTEF also has experience with electrochemical routes for converting pulp and paper by-products into monomers and polymer building blocks, both in national research and in EU bio-based industry collaborations.
