TOPIC 1 – Climate-Resilient Forest Systems
Desert Leaves Foundation offers real-world restoration sites, field implementation and community engagement to research and innovation consortia working on climate-resilient Mediterranean forests.
Our main pilot site is Fuente la Reina (Alto Mijares, Castellón, Spain): 8.4 ha burned in the Villanueva de Viver wildfire inside a Natura 2000 area, where we have planted 8,218 native trees with the Town Council. The site’s carbon absorptions are registered in the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition (MITECO) carbon footprint and absorption register. The site is suited to testing and monitoring post-fire restoration methods, species mixes, drought resilience, assisted natural regeneration such as seed dispersal by jays, and carbon and biodiversity indicators over time.
We can contribute:
- a ready demonstration and living-lab site with baseline data;
- planting, maintenance and survival monitoring;
- community and volunteer engagement, and work with local authorities and landowners;
- communication and dissemination to the public and companies, including corporate volunteering and carbon offsetting schemes.
We also work in the high Andes of Peru (queñua / Polylepis restoration with the NGO CEDEPAS), which can add a non-European comparison site if the call allows it.
We are looking to join consortia led by universities, research centres or forest agencies that need a Mediterranean pilot site and an implementation partner. We are open to a work package on field pilots, monitoring or stakeholder engagement.
Desert Leaves Foundation is a non-profit foundation based in Valencia, Spain, that restores burned and degraded land together with local communities. We plan and carry out native reforestation projects, from site preparation and planting to long-term care and monitoring, and we involve volunteers, schools, companies and municipalities through planting days and awareness events.
Our projects include post-fire restoration in a Natura 2000 area in Castellón with MITECO-registered carbon absorptions, and high-Andean queñua restoration in Puno, Peru, with 40 farming families.
We are a 1% for the Planet Impact Partner and a vetted GlobalGiving partner, and we are accredited as a civil society organisation with the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
