AWSi is interested in joining a consortium under Topic 1 – Climate-Resilient Forest Systems as an AI, environmental data analysis, and sustainability assessment partner. Building on our experience in forest biodiversity analysis with NABU and our work on BIOMetrix, we aim to investigate how AI-supported monitoring can improve understanding of forest biodiversity and ecosystem responses to climate change and disturbances. Potential contributions include automated species detection from acoustic and image data; integrating biodiversity observations with forest inventory, remote sensing, and climate data; and predictive modeling to identify spatial and temporal patterns of ecological change. Together with forest ecology partners, we would develop and validate indicators of ecosystem change and vulnerability, supporting early detection of disturbances and assessment of forest resilience across different sites and forest types. We are also seeking partners with expertise in forest ecology, climate impacts, remote sensing and field monitoring, particularly those providing ecological reference data and access to research sites.
The August-Wilhelm Scheer Institut (AWSi) is an independent, non-profit applied research institute in Germany specializing in digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI). Our Center for Digital GreenTech combines artificial intelligence, data analytics and sustainability assessment to develop practical solutions for environmental challenges. Our relevant experience includes forest biodiversity analysis in cooperation with NABU and work on BIOMetrix, a project exploring AI-based biodiversity measurement and assessment using acoustic analysis, image recognition, and multi-sensor data. Building on this experience, we connect environmental monitoring with data analysis and develop digital tools for practitioners. We bring expertise in AI and machine learning, data integration, environmental and economic assessment, and translating research into practical applications through collaboration with scientific, industry, and public-sector partners.
