TOPIC 4 – Forest Value Chains, Markets and Governance
AWSi is interested in joining a consortium under Topic 4 – Forest Value Chains, Markets and Governance as a partner for digitalization and sustainability assessment. We bring expertise in artificial intelligence, data integration, life cycle assessment (LCA), and life cycle costing (LCC). We aim to support sustainable forest-based value chains by connecting data across actors and assessing the environmental and economic implications of alternative resource-use pathways. Potential contributions include AI-supported analysis of resource flows, comparison of cascading use and recycling scenarios, and digital decision-support tools that make trade-offs between environmental performance, costs and resource efficiency transparent. Working with sector specialists, we would also assess data availability, implementation barriers and the feasibility of transferring solutions across regions and value chains. We are seeking partners with expertise in forest-based industries, circular business models, economics and governance, particularly those providing practical use cases and supply-chain data. Relevant collaborators include forestry organizations, wood-processing and recycling companies, research institutions, and public authorities.
The August-Wilhelm Scheer Institut (AWSi) is an independent, non-profit applied research institute in Germany specializing in digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI). Our Center for Digital GreenTech combines artificial intelligence, data analytics and sustainability assessment to develop practical solutions for environmental challenges. Our relevant experience includes forest biodiversity analysis in cooperation with NABU and work on BIOMetrix, a project exploring AI-based biodiversity measurement and assessment using acoustic analysis, image recognition and multi-sensor data. Building on this experience, we connect environmental monitoring with data analysis and develop digital tools for practitioners. We bring expertise in AI and machine learning, data integration, environmental and economic assessment, and translating research into practical applications through collaboration with scientific, industry, and public-sector partners.
