TOPIC 2 – Adaptive and Multifunctional Forest Management Systems
KOMAG is seeking international partners to co-develop a FOREST proposal on UAV-based monitoring, AI-assisted silvicultural decision support and harvested timber inventory.
Our proposed contribution is the development and validation of an integrated measurement and information system combining multisensor data, automated analysis and geospatial information. The scope includes:
- Individual-tree detection, crown characterisation and reliable crown-to-stem matching in dense stands.
- Recommendations for selected silvicultural interventions, based on tree condition, spatial competition and expert-defined criteria, subject to approval by forestry professionals.
- 3D reconstruction and measurement of logs and timber stacks, distinguishing gross stack volume from solid wood volume and accounting for occlusion.
- Uncertainty assessment and integration of results in a common spatial data model.
We aim to investigate how incomplete observations affect measurement reliability and management recommendations, and when additional ground measurements are needed. The intended outcomes are validated methods and a prototype supporting more efficient fieldwork and informed management decisions.
We are particularly looking for:
- Forestry and silviculture researchers to define management criteria and reference assessments.
- Forest ecology and biodiversity experts to integrate ecological objectives and evaluate trade-offs.
- Forest managers, owners or forestry companies providing pilot sites, operational use cases and ground-reference data.
- Partners with complementary UAV, LiDAR, spectral sensing or timber measurement expertise.
- Partners addressing operational costs, user needs and adoption.
Cooperation would include joint method development, field validation across contrasting forest types and management conditions, and assessment of accuracy, labour requirements and practical benefits.
KOMAG Institute of Mining Technology (ITG KOMAG) is a research institute based in Gliwice, Poland. Its activities include applied research, technology development and the transfer of research results into practical applications.
Relevant capabilities include mechatronic systems, integration of sensors, automation and monitoring systems, image processing and analysis, positioning and navigation of mobile machinery, modelling and simulation, and software development. These capabilities provide a basis for interdisciplinary work on integrated measurement and information systems.
For FOREST, KOMAG intends to contribute, together with a partner, to the development and validation of sensing, data analysis and decision-support methods for forestry applications, in cooperation with forestry specialists and end users.
